The first 10 days of a baby’s life are truly magical and is the perfect time for newborn photos to be captured. During this brief window, babies are incredibly flexible and naturally curl into those heart-melting poses reminiscent of their time in the womb. They are extremely happy to be curled up and warm in these days after birth. It reminds them of the tight space they called home for the past 9 months. They are extremely flexible in the days after birth because the soft cartilage and underdeveloped muscles have not adapted to being out of the womb yet. Making them comfortable and cozy in these curled-up positions.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a baby’s bones are soft at birth to allow for easier movement through the birth canal and to support rapid growth in the first year. By the second week of life, babies begin to stretch out and their flexibility diminishes as their muscles strengthen. This is when you start to see the newborn scrunch disappear.
Capturing these precious moments early ensures that we can highlight these natural poses, along with their tiniest features—wrinkly toes, delicate fingers, and sleepy smiles. This small window of time is also ideal because babies are typically more sleepy and easy to soothe, allowing us to create timeless images with minimal disruption. As baby approaches 2 weeks old they begin to sleep less sound and startle more easily. We mimic the environment for baby to be as cozy as possible. The older baby gets the less this works.
